Ashford Borough Council is reviewing its housing allocations policy—the framework that determines how social housing is allocated in the borough.

We are inviting residents, applicants, stakeholders, and partners to share their views on the proposed updates to ensure the policy remains fair, transparent and responsive to local housing needs.

The policy helps to make sure that available social housing is allocated in a consistent and effective way, giving priority to those in the greatest housing need. The proposed changes aim to improve access, enhance clarity, and ensure the best use of our housing stock across Ashford.

Key areas being reviewed include:

  1. Who qualifies for the housing register – reviewing eligibility and local connection criteria.
  2. How housing need is assessed – clarifying banding and priority for applicants.
  3. How properties are allocated – ensuring the process is fair and makes best use of available homes.
  4. Support for vulnerable applicants – improving support for those with complex needs or urgent housing issues.
  5. Encouraging sustainable tenancies – aligning allocations with support services to promote long-term housing stability.
