Right to Buy and Fraud

The Right to Buy scheme allows eligible council tenants to purchase their home at a discount. It is important that all applications are made truthfully and in accordance with the rules. Providing false information, failing to disclose interests, or allowing someone else to benefit from your Right to Buy unlawfully may constitute fraud. This includes situations where a tenant is offered money or incentives by a third party to purchase the property on their behalf.

Fraud in relation to Right to Buy is taken very seriously. The Council will carry out checks at various stages of the application process to ensure compliance. Where fraud is suspected, applications may be cancelled and legal action may be taken. This could result in prosecution, recovery of the property, repayment of the discount, and other penalties.

If you are aware of any suspected Right to Buy fraud, or if you have been approached by someone offering to assist you in a way that does not feel legitimate, please report it to the Council. Protecting public housing assets ensures the scheme remains fair and available to those who are genuinely entitled to benefit from it.
