Disabled access

Once the barrier has been closed to the pedestrian zone there is a prohibition of moving traffic, so access will not be granted to vehicles of blue badge holders.

There are a number of locations around the town centre where disabled bays are provided, when access past the barrier is prohibited (see map, right). In addition, badge holders may park in all on-street Pay and Display bays, if they display a valid disabled badge in their vehicle.

For information on how one may use a disabled badge on-street in England, please refer to the guidance given by the Department for Transport. All badge holders should be aware of this guidance.

Parkmobile - cashless parking

Drivers use their mobile phone to pay for parking in all off-street and on-street pay and display spaces in Ashford & Tenterden, with Parkmobile.

To use the service, you must register your details with Parkmobile:

When you register you will be asked for your credit or debit card details and your vehicle registration number (you can register more than one vehicle). Once registered, you call the Parkmobile phone number (or use the mobile app) and key in your location number – both displayed on the pay and display machines.

  • Start your session when parked. You must stop the session upon your return, subject to the maximum period permitted
  • The session will end automatically at the end of the chargeable period for that car park. You will have to start a new session if leaving a vehicle in a car park overnight
  • There are user charges for SMS messages relating to the service. Users can access and change their settings online

Enforcement

Our Civil Enforcement Officers (CEOs) can check whether a driver has paid for parking in real time, through their GPRS-enabled handheld device.

N.B. All of our machines also take cash.

Payment by card

Most of our car parks and all of our on-street machines take card payments (see car park information above for details)

Please follow instructions on-screen, or you can download our pay by card for parking guide [pdf] 218KB.

Pay and display parking (on-street)

Pay and Display parking can be found in on-street locations near the town centre, but please note that all of these are shared with local residents and their visitors.

During the day (8am-6pm, Monday to Saturday), there is a maximum stay of one hour. Those wishing to park for longer would therefore be advised to use a car park.

Pedestrian zone

Ashford town centre is a pedestrian area. There is an order preventing the movement of traffic within the zone during certain times (see below for details of the barrier closure times).

The central pedestrian zone includes:

  • Upper Bank Street
  • High Street
  • North Street
  • Part of Park Street

N.B. There is also limited access to the New Rents (New Street) area (access to New Street via the entrance on Drum Lane) during the day, when the pedestrian zone is in effect.

Bank Street Barrier

There is a manned barrier on the entrance to the pedestrian zone, on Bank Street (at the junction with Tufton Street).

With very few exceptions, no traffic will be permitted to pass this point once the barrier has been closed.

Access is not given to blue badge holders after the barrier has been closed.

Access is restricted by the barrier:

  • Monday to Friday - 10.30am to 5pm
  • Saturday - 8am to 6pm
  • Sunday - not restricted

Vehicle access permits to pedestrian zone

Special permits can be issued to vehicles that require regular access, for example residents and businesses. Due to the nature of the restriction here there are rules relating to what activities might allow us to grant an access permit.

Please contact Parking Services in order to enquire about an access permit. You can either write to us or email permitcustomercare@ashford.gov.uk
